Devalben was born in Phelan, near Gadhsisa. As per custom, she attended school only until 3rd grade, but with her own efforts
has achieved literacy in Gujarati. Devalben learned embroidery from he mother. She has a fine hand and is particularly skilled in
interlacing techniques. At about age 18 she also learned the new art of machine embroidery.
Devalben joined Kala Raksha recently, and now her work sells throughout the country and even abroad. But she reserves time for
her own work too. Fashion is important for young women, she feels, and embroidery is essential in expressing Rabari identity. “I
never knew I could use my own ideas! I just embroidered and didn’t have that much interest. But when I did the windmill, I
discovered my ability. I got first place, and it really gave me confidence.”
