Junaid entered the family business of Ajrakh printing at the age of seventeen. The tradition can be traced for ten generations
in his family. When their original village Dhamadka was destroyed in the earthquake of 2001, Junaid’s family pioneered establishing
the new village Ajrakhpur, where they carry on block carving, printing and dyeing.
The magical colours of natural dyed ajrakh have gained worldwide recognition. The most prized version is printed on both sides,
requiring precise registration of patterns. Junaid is keen to know the mind of the buyer. Increased production without sacrificing
quality is also a goal in his life. “At KRV I learned to appreciate my heritage. One teacher asked why I am not wearing my own work
and I thought of making a line of shirts. I received an order for 20 m of the cloth I used. I gained confidence. I can make
presentations in front of anyone, and convey my design ideas.”
